National Partnerships
MTM formed a partnership with Dr. Ruby Payne, CEO of aha! Process, Inc. Dr. Payne’s book, A Framework for Understanding Poverty sold its millionth copy in 2006. Her book was heralded by schools as a major breakthrough in how to teach and graduate students prepared for economic success. She has a worldwide network of 7000 certified trainers who are helping to transform schools. She co-wrote the book Bridges out of Poverty, with author and national consultant Phil DeVol which provides clear and compelling information to employers, as well as judges, police, healthcare providers, and social service directors on how to be more effective in working with people coming out of poverty. It also provides a structure for community-wide planning to address the systemic problems that contribute to poverty Mental models and programs that synch with Circles™
Circles is Us Pilot for Ministry to the Poor for United Methodist Church. "This is the first of five global models for dealing with poverty that are part of our Ministry with the Poor priority," said Rachel Lieder Simeon, interim deputy general secretary and executive responsible for the Ministry with the Poor task force at Global Ministries.
Research
Circles evolved from the community-based work by Move the Mountain Leadership Center beginning in 1995. We formed our first iteration of the Circles model in 2000. A evaluation of progress was done by a professor from Iowa State University in 2004 showing the results to date. We transferred the model to sites in Missouri and Minnesota and found more encouraging early results which are published in this report.
The second version of Circles has been evolving since 2007 through our partnership with aha! Process, Inc. and the Bridges out of Poverty approach. Our research partner, Wilder Research Group out of the twin cities, has received first year data (July 1 2008-June 30, 2009) and will be preparing a report for distribution early this fall.
